The area outside of Sturgis is beautiful.  Several times when it was hot or I had time to kill I just headed east down Hwy 34 which is the same as Lazalle.  This is about the only traffic free ride you can take from Glencoe, The Full Throttle Saloon, or Buffalo Chip.

Sorry the pics got toasted in a corrupt memory card.  Anyway, here's some additional info.

If you head east on 34 you'll hit gas and foot 50 miles after Sturgis in Union Center.  You can keep going until you hit 73 and head South which will take you to Phillip South Dakota.  If you want to head back you can take Hwy 14 West which goes through Wall and eventually to I-90  Then from 90 back through Rapid City and to Sturgis.

The ride took me about six hours including a rest stop for lunch in Phillip.  It's about a 280 mile day trip. 

I used this route and kept on 73 until 90 when I left Sturgis.  I added 50 miles to my trip but the time was probably saved vs putting up with the traffic in Sturgis.
