Looking for South Dakota Hotel Availability?

I woke up at the Buffalo Chip about 6:00am cold as hell.  Since I was sleeping on my bedroll with just a jacket for warmth I decided to head back to camp.  The skies were looking grey as well so I hoped to sleep through any storms.

Woke up at camp about 9:30am to the continuous parade of motorcycles going to and from their sites.  Got a change of clothes and headed for the food area.  Sat and drank coffee and talked with other bikers while I waited for the rain to move out.  After two hours of waiting I decided it would be a good day to hit Main Street and do some shopping.  It was definitely not going to be fun to be riding in the rain.

I drove up and down main street in the rain hoping for a spot but none to be found.  Ended up parking a block past the police station but was close enough to return to the bike anytime to put purchases away etc.  Shopped for about an hour and once the sun returned I started taking various pictures.  Because of the rain there were mostly other regular type people riding and walking.  I imaging I'd have seen more interesting stuff had the weather been better.  After pictures I decided to head to Devils Tower.

While proceeding through the traffic jam on Lazalle I ended up getting on I-90 East instead of West.  The great thing about touring alone is that you can change your mind anytime.  I decided to hit the air show at the air force base in Rapid city instead.  After about 10 miles on I-90 I saw bikers flagging everyone to slow and could see traffic stopped in both directions for miles and miles.  I bailed off the freeway, down into the ditch and up onto a frontage road by the flea market.  While driving east I came upon an accident with the chopper just lifting off.  There were three bikes scattered in the ditch.  Evidently one biker hit his brake, lost control and two other bikers hit him.  The first died and the others were taken by helicopter to the hospital.  After seeing this I decided I'd better just follow the frontage road.  This road took me to a campground with a bar called the Dakota Spirits.  For those of you who've been to Outer Limits in Rapid City or Shot Gun Willies, this bar topped them both.  It's actually a campground with a titty bar on premises, go figure.

After spending enough time to get the traffic moving I headed back it was ominous driving west just past the accident where the bikes were laying.  I decided to head for the Full Throttle Saloon again and spent the rest of the evening there watching burnouts, the Wall of Death, and Joan Jett.  I've got to say one of the coolest things about the Full Throttle Saloon is the space.  No matter how many people are there you can still find a comfortable chair on a porch and just people watch.  Before you know it there's a band playing, a burnout happening or a topless girl riding the bull or up on someone's shoulders.  If only like could be this hard everyday....
